Episode Highlights (Mike Beyman)

I’m really not a proponent of traditional media consolidation and of legacy players buying more

Mike Beyman

If you have half of America listening to podcasts in a given period, and yet you’re only talking about $3 Billion dollars, there is a lot of opportunity for growth.

When I think about what local media could ultimately do, I think about venue operators, I think about hotel companies, I think about organizations who have a real vested interest to tell the honest and potentially positive stories about the arts and culture scene in local cities

The Host Weighs In

First off, I want to thank Mike for taking the time to come on “Make That Make Sense” and for sharing his expert analysis on the latest news at the intersection of digital media and money. We actually recorded a 30 second wrap up conversation after the trivia ended, but the audio was messed up, so that’s why it’s not included in this episode. Welp, first episode kinks to work out, I guess.

Overall, I thought Mike did a great job of explaining why he’s against major media consolidation, especially since the returns on these mega deals have been less than inspiring. It seems very likely that we’ll see a couple of big media mergers in 2025 given Trump’s deregulation agenda. On the bright side, at least we’ll have plenty of deals to pick from!

Additionally, I strongly agree with Mike’s point that Youtube has completely revolutionized the discoverability element of podcasts. In response, Spotify is starting to add more features to make the podcasts on the platform more engaging. In fact, yesterday, Spotify announced the arrival of their new platform, Spotify for Creators, a free podcast hosting and analytics platform providing podcasters additional ways to monetize their shows and incorporate video.

Furthermore, it will be super interesting to see the impact of BSE Global’s acquisition of Brooklyn Magazine. If it can give me cool spots in Brooklyn to go to, I’m all in!
